Dental Medical Tourism
Give Yourself A Toothy
Vacation! Dental work is expensive. There is seemingly no end to how
much having work done on your mouth can cost, sometimes into the tens
of thousands of dollars. If you were lucky enough to have fluoride in
your water and dental care in childhood, your teeth might not be your
wallet’s enemy. If you weren’t, chances are you
cringe at the thought of heading to the dentist for even the simplest
issue.
What would you do to
decrease the exorbitant cost of your dental care? Would you travel
thousands of miles to a third world country if someone told you they
could do that extensive dental work for pennies on the dollar? Most
people would. After all, the difference in cost between $10,000 and
$700 is immense, isn’t it?
Medical tourism is the new
practice of flying to an exotic, often third world location to get
elective medical procedures done while “on
vacation”. Everyone from movie stars to average
Joe’s are starting to take trips based around medical
procedures. The medical care in other countries is often so cost
efficient that even factoring in the cost of airfare and hotel you are
saving over half of what you would have paid State side.
If you think that other
countries wouldn’t have the technology of United States
doctors, think again. You can get the same state-of-the-art, metal free
dental implants done in India as you can in the States, at a fraction
of the cost. Here those cost as much as $8,000, and sometimes more, but
in India they are less than $1000.
Key to a successful
operation in another country is planning ahead. No matter what you are
having done: dental work, a face lift, implants or complex surgery like
cardiovascular leg repair, you need to really research the hospital you
choose. Make sure it is a reputable facility. Find out about their
after care policies, since you won’t be able to get follow up
care in the United States for a procedure done over seas.
Have their ever been
botched surgeries and complications arising from surgery over seas?
Absolutely. Surprisingly, there have not been as many as
you’d think. Even the complications and botched jobs that
there have been could have been avoided with proper research. Why go to
a doctor practicing out of his garage when there are so many state of
the art facilities available if you just take time to look?
If you can find people in
your area who have tried medical tourism for dentistry, ask them about
their experience. Nothing lets you know how good or bad an experience
will be like first hand testimonials. Plus, they might have had a
chance to learn from a mistake or too and be able to give you excellent
hotel recommendations or advice on follow up care. You won’t
know unless you ask.
